Anyone unfamiliar with Haven even after having Crocker around, here's a quick summary of where Dwight is coming from:

On the surface, Haven looks like any regular small fishing town in Maine, but it hides a dark secret. As one of the other main characters in the show once says "It's like there are two Havens. There's the Haven you see in front of you and then there is a second hidden mysterious Haven just under the surface." Haven's secret is that many of the residents there are 'cursed' with what have come to be called The Troubles and they come in many forms from weather control to dream manipulation to human/animal transformations.  Basically, if you can think of a terrible superpower to have it could easily be a Haven Trouble!   

Dwight's trouble is that he is essentially a bullet magnet.  Any weapon that uses gunpowder and explosive force, if it goes off within 300 ft of him, that projectile will change course like a heat seeking missle and head right for Dwight. He wears a bullet proof vest almost every moment for this reason and hunts with a crossbow since guns are out of the question for him. (This is also why he really really want tasers to be used as the standard with the local police and why his shop and apartment are not near the police station or school.)

Dwight has had a bit of a troubled (no pun intended) past. His Trouble showed up while he was serving in Afghanistan and it nearly killed him. His wife left him shortly after and he raised his daughter, Lizzie, as a single dad. She died around the age of 9 or 10 when her Trouble activated. He is a good man. Stern but fair and honest and hard working. Dwight wont take much nonsense but he will always be there when you need him once you prove yourself trustworthy and get past that shell he has built up around himself. He tries so hard to protect everyone and takes it really hard and often will blame himself when he can't. This can cause some people to think he is being standoffish and snubbing them but he often goes out of his way to show that he is willing to help when he can- but he is done letting himself be a doormat to others. He is done being taken advantage of and then dropped like last week's garbage.

Dwight will be coming to Fandom High from early on in the canon- early season 1 maybe even pre-canon.  Lizzie just died not even a year ago, and Dwight is having a really hard time coping with everything. He naturally blames himself for her death and for not being able to protect her and save her. He needs to get away from Haven and everything so he's been looking for someplace to relocate to. He suddenly receives a letter saying that he has inherited a business from some distant family member he has never heard of. He figures now is as good a time as any to make a new start and heads off for Fandom.

 

Other random things people should know about Dwight:

He suffers from PTSD and anxiety though he usually keeps it under control and hidden from others

He is an excellent hunter and tracker, doesn't get lost easily, and loves being out in nature

His nickname is Sasquatch -though no one other than Duke can usually get away with using it

He is grey-ace/demiromantic bisexual and may at some point find someone but that is definitely not on his radar right now
He is a good guy and tries to do his best, but he can be very hard on himself when he feels he has failed and let someone down
He is slow to trust and open up but once he lets you in and considers you a friend you have a loyal friend for life
He may seem a little stand offish, that's just how he's coping right now and trying to deal with things

He may resist opening up at first but give him time and give him a reason to like/trust you and you will be fine
