Day Three Road Trip Adventure With Miguel
Sometime later, as the early morning rays shone through the crack in the curtain, falling right into Dwight's eyes, he stirred and stretched. Groaning as he tried to open his eyes, he rolled over and ran his hand through his hair, glancing over to see if Miguel was awake.
Miguel was not awake. Miguel was very determinedly Not Awake, with his head buried under a pillow. He twitched a bit when Dwight groaned, but didn't wake.
Dwight grinned slightly and stood, making his way to the alcove where his bag was. Grabbing out a change of clothes, he went to the bathroom. Thankfully he found out the bathroom had several light switches and he found one that wasn't totally blinding and managed to get a quick shower.
A little while later he came out and put away the dirty clothes and set the UMF shirt and his other shirt out on the bed as he sat down. Glancing over to the form still laying in the other bed he grinned and picked up the TV remote and started flipping through the channels.
Miguel gradually became aware of the sound and movement in the room, and eventually stretched and looked over at Dwight, rubbing his eyes. "Is there coffee yet?"
"Front desk said breakfast would be ready around 6. It's 6:10 now so I was about to head down and check it out. I'll have some coffee and hopefully some food to get us started off here shortly," Dwight said as he slipped on his boots and headed for the door.
"Oh, good." Miguel buried his head in the pillow again. "Wake me up when it's here."
He should probably get up and shower. Maybe he would. ...Maybe.
Dwight nodded and closed the door behind him and headed to the lobby.
When he returned he was laden down with goods. A carry tray was balanced in one hand with four large cups of coffee with lids situated in it. In the other hand were two styrofoam containers.
"Got the quite the haul here for us," he said as he walked in, not looking to see if Miguel was still asleep or not as he set everything down on the table. "And shirtless seems to be the trick," he said with a laugh as he pulled out a visitor's guide from his pocket and turned to see if Miguel was actually awake.
Miguel was actually up and showered, though still shirtless himself. "Oh, good." He made a beeline for one of the cups of coffee. "You're a lifesaver." He nodded at the containers. "Actual hot food this time?"
Dwight handed Miguel one of the cups and then set out the containers and opened them.
"Both. They got bacon and sausage, hash browns, and scrambled eggs. I can't vouch for the eggs but everything else looks really good. They also have the usual bagels, muffins, and such, so I brought some of that too."
Dwight put out the two plates and silverware sets he had also grabbed.
"Sorry it took a bit. The guy and the girl up front this morning were in a chatty mood. But they did let me load up the food so that's good."
"That's the important part," Miguel said. He slurped his coffee before setting it down to scoop half of everything onto his plate. He sat at the table and tried the eggs, then shrugged. "Could be better, but not awful. Hard to mess up scrambled."
"Bacon's actually pretty good. Not soggy limp but also not shatter into pieces hard either," Dwight said as he finished up one of his strips. "And yeah eggs are passable for a hotel buffet," he agreed as he took a bite.
Miguel was quiet for a few minutes while he ate. Then he looked up at Dwight as he drank more coffee. "So where to next? Do we have plans yet?"
Dwight reached over and grabbed the visitor's guide he had gotten from the front desk and flipped it open as he finished the last of his bacon.
"According to this, we have plenty of options if we are looking for things within the area." He scanned the page to find the list he had seen earlier. "Looks like there's several mini golf places, a ropes course, indoor rock wall and sky diving, and an indoor water park. They even have an American Ninja Warrior type of course set up not too far away. And of course you have the usual malls and outlets, parks, and such. Next town over has an aquarium too, it looks like."
Dwight handed the guide over to Miguel as he grabbed his coffee and took another drink."I'm good with pretty much anything," he said between drinks as he finished off the first cup.
"Wait, indoor sky diving?" Miguel scrunched up his face in skepticism as he took the brochure. "How does that even work?" He looked over the options. "We can skip the malls and outlets unless you're dying to shop; it's not really my thing. Only if you want the water park, I'll need to buy a swimsuit."
He grinned. "Don't suppose there's any betting at the rock wall or the course? That could be fun."
"Indoor skydiving's kinda cool... never done it myself but looks interesting..." Dwight muttered as he pulled out his phone and fumbled with it for a minute before passing it over to Miguel.
"And probably no betting officially at any of the places but some friendly betting on the side might be possible."
Miguel flipped through the pictures on the phone. "That looks...kinda stupid, actually." He shrugged. "What's the point in being two feet off the ground?" He passed Dwight's phone back and returned to his eggs. "What do you feel like doing?"
"Eh you can get about ten to fifteen feet up... I think it's more the sensation of it than anything," he said with a shrug. "Nothing new and exciting for Spider-man, I'm sure. Most of this is probably boring as hell compared to what you have done," he said with a laugh. "The ropes course and all would be interesting. And I'd love to see you decimate any records at the obstacle courses."
"Yeah?" Miguel grinned. "Maybe I can win you some money or something." He ate a piece of bacon and poked at his hash browns. "You know, you take it all weirdly in stride." He shrugged uncomfortably. "I'm really kind of a freak, and you don't seem to mind. Though I think you overestimate how exciting the future is."
"You are talking to a guy who attracts bullets to himself like a magnet. I'm from a town where people can turn into animals, enter people's dreams, have pain and poison touches, create hallucinations, and even kill with a simple touch. Being 'normal' is almost more of an oddity than having an affliction or ability of some kind."
Dwight fell silent for a moment as he started on the second cup of coffee. "You aren't actively trying to kill me with your abilities and what not. And even in Haven most of the time, the dangerous Troubles weren't the fault of the person afflicted with them. I made a promise to protect people like us. So why would I mind?" he added with a reassuring smile.
"You'd think you'd be a bit more wary of people with powers, then," Miguel said. "Knowing all the dangerous ones." He finished up his first coffee and started on the next.
"Wary in my own way," Dwight said with a shrug. "I mean it's taken... how many months, for us to hang out like this? People deal and react to things in different ways. Not everyone puts up a huge wall the way people like Rosa do. Not that there's anything wrong with it... just not who I am," Dwight said with another shrug.
"Besides, you haven't given me a reason to worry yet, and don't think you are going to suddenly start." He looked at Miguel with a smirk. "Though I have to wonder about your sanity hanging out with the guy who attracts bullets. I mean healing factor and all aside, getting shot at is probably still not high on your 'things I'd like to experience' list," he said shaking his head.
"Not really, but then I wouldn't be the one getting shot, would I?" Miguel asked. "Not that someone trying to shoot me is much higher on my list. Already been there, just not with lead bullets." He went back to his food. "You want to pick a place, go in order closest to furthest, or throw a dart at the map or something?"
"If we are coming back here tonight to end things we can start farthest and work our way back here. If we are heading back towards home tonight we can go however you want. I'm flexible. I took the entire week off so I got no responsibilities to rush back to for a bit yet," Diwght said with a chuckle.
"I figured we'd keep going west. Or north, or something," Miguel said with a shrug. "You want to stay the night, we should leave up the 'do not disturb'. Or we could look for a new place with less blinding walls."
"Yeah... probably best to keep moving... Surprised the walls didn't induce a nightmare-riddled sleep thinking about it," Dwight said with a slight shiver. " Ok so heading west. Sounds good to me."
Miguel nodded. "All right, let's take all this down, then." He finished his food and went to get the first comforter. "Then pick your first place."
"I'd say let's check out the ropes course," Dwight said as he stood and threw the empty containers in the trash. "Should give us enough for both of us to do for a good bit."
"Ropes it is." Miguel picked up the last coffee and finished it up, then tossed it, too. He tugged down the blankets, leaving spiderwebs in the corners of the walls but no other sign they'd been tacked up all night. "Let's get out of here before I go blind."
Dwight nodded and grabbed his bags and headed for the door. "Agreed!" he said with a nod. "Gonna go get us checked out. Meet you at the truck?"
"Sounds good." Miguel put on a shirt and picked up his own bag, detouring to the buffet area for another cup of coffee before heading out to the truck and waiting. The huge pink dog was still belted into the back seat, and he made a face at it, then just leaned on the door and drank his coffee.
A short time later Dwight returned with a fresh cup of coffee for himself.
"Shouldn't take long to get to the course," Dwight said as he opened the truck door. "Think the guide said it was like less than ten miles down the road."
"So, ten to twenty minutes depending on speed and traffic," Miguel translated as he swung up into the truck. "Need directions?"
"Naw, it seemed pretty straightforward," Dwight said as he climbed in and started up the truck. "It's basically right off the main road here. We should be able to see it from the road actually, 'cause it should be a large indoor and outdoor complex."
"Sounds good." Miguel belted himself in and looked around as they drove. "It's kind of nice around here." He smirked and gave Dwight a look. "If you're into trees and things." Hey, he had a city reputation to keep up.
"I am," Dwight said with a grin as he glanced over at Miguel and chuckled. "You can get back at me one day if we ever end up porting to some big city somewhere. Might not be back to your exact home or timeline but something similar... then you can show me around and geek out over all your high-tech new fangled stuff," Dwight chuckled. Cause ya know, he had a country-boy reputation to keep up himself.
"Eh." Miguel waved a hand dismissively. "Cameras everywhere, annoying ads, neighbors you barely know. You're not missing much there, either. I told you there's not a lot I miss about my time."
"But the flying cars...." Dwight said with a half whine, half excited tone. He looked at Miguel and laughed as they drove on. "Too bad it's not really possible to get the good side of the tech without all the negative crap that usually comes with it," Dwight mused as they drove on. "Though I still feel cheated, we never got those flying cars I was promised as a kid!'
Miguel snorted. "Flying cars, flying bikes. Drivers still as rotten as ever. You sure you want that?"
"Yeah... you're right. Knowing my luck I'd survive all this just to get taken out by some teenager going for a joy ride. Still... would be nice to have at least experienced it." Dwight continued on for a moment, then nodded down the road. "Think I see it ahead there. Shouldn't be too much longer now."
"My first day as Spider-man I nearly got taken out by some teenagers out for a joy ride," Miguel said. "But hey, they distracted the Public Eye - the cops - long enough for me to get some distance in."
He eyed the complex as they got closer. "So what are we looking at here, anyway?"
"Basically, it's like a huge obstacle course type of setup," Dwight said as they drove on. "This place has indoor and outdoor courses of different skill levels. Rope climbs, rock walls, suspension tightropes, and all manner of on ground and high up obstacles to overcome."
Dwight drove on and turned off the main road heading towards the complex. "There, you can see some of the taller courses up there in the trees," he said, pointing to the bits of rope, netting, and bridge that could be seen from the road.
Miguel looked out the window and nodded. "So basically you just wanted to climb trees," he said wryly, smiling at Dwight.
There were people wandering around in hard hats and safety harnesses, and he made a face. "They're going to make us wear that stuff, aren't they?" he asked, resigned.
"Hey climbing trees and cliffs and what not is fun when you don't do it regularly," he said, giving Miguel a wink. "And yeah unfortunately the safety gear is a requirement," Dwight said with a laugh. "Super strength and healing factors don't overrule legal lawsuits in this day and age. Sorry buddy."
"I should've realized that," Miguel said. He grimaced. "Don't suppose they'll let me take my shoes off, either." He could use his talons without them, but they probably had some rules about that, too.
They parked, and he climbed out of the truck and looked around. It was actually a fairly nice day, if a bit bright.
"Yeah, no... shoes are required," Dwight chuckled. "Us mere humans don't usually do too well without shoes and other basic protections. You know, weak that we are."
Dwight climbed out of the truck and looked around. "At least the weather is nice today. You gonna be ok with the sun or should we stick indoors? Not sure which is worse... natural bright sun or glowing indoor lights."
"Eh." Miguel shrugged. "Both about the same, so take your pick. As long as I can keep my sunglasses on." He frowned, but he could see at least one other person with glasses on, so he relaxed.
"Nawww, you will be fine with 'em," Dwight said reassuringly. "Just tell them they are prescription sunglasses and you don't have any others if anyone gives you any flak. But it shouldn't be an issue."
Miguel nodded. "Well, I definitely can't see without them in this." He nodded at the woman behind the desk and squinted at the list of activities behind her. He shrugged. "Okay, I have no idea. You pick," he told Dwight. "Trees? Rock wall? Tightrope?"
"Let's start with the rock wall,"Dwight said with a smirk. "See how good you are without those special abilities," he said leaning over and giving Miguel a nudge. "Though I'm sure you will still leave me in the dust."
"We'll see." Miguel smirked. "Okay, rock wall first." He looked at the woman, who went over the pricing options. He shrugged and looked back at Dwight. "Day pass, you think? Then we don't have to worry about it later." It sounded like a lot of money, considering how cheap everything on Fandom was, but he had it.
"Yeah day pass. Will let us do whatever we want indoors or outdoors," Dwight responded with a nod. "Also lets us grab food and drink at the snack bar inside. Won't be anything major but food's food right?"
"It's probably healthy," Miguel pointed out, looking to the woman to confirm. She nodded. "So it shouldn't be too bad. I had enough grease yesterday." He got out his wallet and paid her, then listened as she gave him directions to the rock wall. "Okay, let's see how a sasquatch climbs."
Dwight smirked as he paid for his pass and glanced at Miguel. "Not as fast as a spider I'm sure, but you may be a bit surprised," he added with a laugh.
A few minutes later they were standing at the base of the wall outside, fastened into their safety harnesses and gear. Dwight glanced over at Miguel and fought back a laugh at how resigned he looked about the safety gear.
"So going for speed or difficulty for the first round?" he asked, gesturing towards the wall. Each side had two distinct routes. One was fairly simple and easily laid out, the other was a bit more involved with the hand and foot holds scattered and more complicated in their positioning.
Miguel adjusted his helmet again and shrugged. "I say let's do the hard one. No point in trying for speed unless someone feels like betting or something; might as well just enjoy it."
Dwight nodded and got into position. "See ya at the top," he said as he grabbed the handhold a few feet above his head and started climbing. Securing his feet, he searched for a moment and reached out for another handhold and pulled himself up a little farther.
Miguel followed suit, reaching for a hold a bit lower than Dwight's and digging his talons in. He could lift his weight just fine, and he didn't even really need to use the handholds, but it was a fun challenge to do it. A little more complicated since his shoes had nowhere near the hold of his talons, and he found himself having to shift his weight to make the best use of them.
Dwight climbed on for a bit and paused and glanced over at Miguel who was pretty well keeping pace with him for the most part.
"Not too shabby there, Spider-Man," he said quietly with a smirk once they were far enough up where no one else could hear. "And without the webs at all. I'm impressed!"
"Hey, I'm not only about the webs," Miguel said, smiling wryly back. "Pretty impressed at your ability to hang on, though." And, because he couldn't just give an honest compliment, he smirked. "Especially lifting all that weight."
"Yeah yeah... Hardy har-har." Dwight gave a mock glare to Miguel as he shifted and looked around for the next handhold to grab. "Extra weight means more muscles. Used to do this all the time back in the day... though...." he admitted with a slight groan as he stretched for the next hold. "I am a little out of practice."
"For fun or because you had to?" Miguel asked, pulling himself up more than pushing to get to the next handhold. "There's probably something like this closer to home. Or there's cliffs."
"Little of both. I grew up in mountain country so it was always something I did," Dwight said as he pushed himself onto his toes and grabbed another handhold. "In Haven, we lived on the coast and there were cliffs everywhere so it was a regular thing we did whenever we had free time.... As rare as that had gotten by the time I left...."
Dwight swung one leg up and secured a foothold then climbed up a little farther. "But stuff like this, and a lot of even more challenging things, were common during boot camp and all the training I did in the military." Dwight shook his head slightly and chuckled. "So, guess you can say things like this are kinda in my blood."
"So you're a jock; got it." Miguel pulled over to one side to get to the next hold, then grabbed the next. "Whereas I'm a nerd. Or so Rosa constantly tells me," he said fondly.
He was totally a science nerd.
"No, No.. she's one hundred percent right," Dwight smirked as he looked over at Miguel. "You are totally a nerd. But the good kind."
Dwight turned his attention to the next part of the climb and shook his head. "They don't make this last leg easy do they? I've got a good reach compared to most. I think the average person would be hard pressed to get through this part without some seriously fancy stretching."
Miguel huffed in agreement as he tried to figure a way up himself without just kicking off his shoes. Or grabbing onto the vertical part of the wall, which felt like cheating. After a minute, he sighed, gave up, and just dug in with his fingers and leapt to catch the next hold.
There was a smattering of applause from below the wall, and he looked down and sighed.
"Show off," Dwight said with a broad grin as he heaved himself up to the next handhold. Using mostly upper body strength he hoisted himself up to the top and over the ledge, crawling onto the platform at the top.
He got his own spate of applause at that.
"Ok, that was fun.. Quite the workout though," he said huffing a little as he caught his breath and watched Miguel climb up as well. "Though the best part comes next. And no, you can't free fall down to the ground, Sorry. But you can swing down on that," Dwight said, pointing to the zipline that ran above their heads down to the ground where the crowd was waiting.
"Eh, that works. It's one thing to piss off people by being too good at something, and another to give everyone heart attacks," Miguel answered. "I can use the line." He took a few seconds to dust off his hands, straighten his helmet again, and shift his shoes. "I should've brought my UMF boots. They'd just look like those shoes with the toes, and I'd still be able to move in them." Too late now. He was already here. He waved at Dwight. "After you."
Dwight adjusted the helmet and shifted the harness slightly with a nod. Grabbing hold of one of the bars hanging from the line, he tightened his grip and then jumped off the platform. As he sped down the line towards the crowd below, he let out a "whooooo" of excitement on his way down.
Standing on the ground seconds later as he was getting unhooked from the harness, Dwight looked up at Miguel and gave him the thumbs up that it was all clear for him.
Miguel rolled his eyes at Dwight's enthusiasm, grabbed on, and briefly entertained the idea of scaling down the line. Then gave up and just slid down normally. "That was interesting," he said. "Kind of fun. I think I will go get my boots, though." Sneakers were not doing him any favors. "Where to next?"
"Your choice for where to next," Dwight said once he was out of the harness and able to move again. "Go get your boots and think about what you want me to kick your arse at," he said with a playful smirk.
"In your dreams," Miguel said, smirking. "Keys?" He held out his hands for Dwight to toss him the keys.
Dwight chuckled and tossed him the keys. "Don't take too long!" he called out after Miguel. "Can't escape the inevitable!"
While he waited for Miguel to return, Dwight looked over the activity board again and flipped through the guidebook they had. "Who am I kidding....." he muttered to himself with a laugh. "He's gonna kick MY arse at every one of these."
Miguel jogged out to the truck and tossed his sneakers off in disgust. He really had no idea how a normal human would do this sort of thing, but it wasn't working for him. He dug in his bag to pull out his outfit, then detached the boots and pulled them on, tugging his jeans down over them.
He closed the truck up and hurried back, already feeling better. He found Dwight and tossed the keys back. "Let's head out to the trees? It's a nice enough day, might as well ruin my city reputation."
"Eh don't worry. Your reputation is safe with me," Dwight said with a smirk.
"Ok so the ropes then," he said as they made their way across the property a little ways to the stand of trees. All around the area were rope ladders, tight ropes, zip lines, rope bridges and all manner of free climb ropes hanging from the trees.
"So, ready to see who's more monkey like? The spider or the sasquatch?"
Miguel smirked. "See you at the top." He started up one ladder, only to get a piercing whistle and a stern employee insisting he put on a harness first. He sighed and gave them a tight-lipped smile, letting them belt him in. "Spoil all the fun," he groused, and they ignored him.
Dwight hid a laugh behind a fake cough as he watched Miguel twitch as they got harnessed up. Once they were all suited up and given the ok he nodded and grinned.
"See YOU at the top!" he yelled as he ran towards one of the rope ladders and started climbing.
Miguel rolled his eyes (not that anybody could see them) and started up himself. It was a little different than climbing webbing, but easier to get used to than the shoes on the rock wall had been. He clambered up the rope to a tightrope, made his way over to a platform, and looked around for the next place to go.
Dwight admittedly had a harder time with the tightrope than he had anticipated. It was hard to balance that much weight...and he didn't exactly have a good center of gravity either. He almost lost his footing a few times but managed to half-run, half-jump the last five feet or so and landed on the platform next to Miguel.
"Not bad for a sasquatch," Miguel said, teasing. "One of these days I should introduce you to Sasquatch. Heather. You'd probably like her." He headed for the next ladder, a set of slats in a tree trunk.
"Look forward to it," Dwight said as he watched Miguel for a moment and glanced around, opting to head to the other side of the platform. Before him was a rope ladder hanging from a high branch. Heavy duty wooden dowels formed the rungs. As he grabbed hold and started to climb it swung from side to side. Dwight paused a moment for it to slow down a little then began his climb up to the next platform overhead.
Miguel's ladder went past another platform and kept going up, so so did he. When he stopped at the top platform, the branches were thin enough to get a pretty good view of the rest of the complex. He dutifully clipped himself to the nearest safety line, then promptly ignored it to lean out and have a good look.
Dwight glanced over his shoulder midway up the ropes and chuckled as he watched Miguel. Typical - skirting the rules just so. Yup that was Miguel. Using the time to his advantage, Dwight finished climbing up to the platform and clipped his line to the next safety line and made his way towards the first swinging bridge.
"Having fun daydreaming?" he called out with a laugh.
Miguel rolled his eyes and shot Dwight the bird. "It's a good view. What's the point coming so far up if you're not going to look around?" For some people it might be the novelty of climbing high, but eh. For him, it was going to be the view.
"Best view is at the very top," Dwight said, though he did pause to enjoy the view from where he was at the starting platform of the bridge.
For a moment he thought back to the view up on the ridge that overlooked Haven. Maybe someday he would make it back there to see the view again... maybe.
"Got your camera?" he called out. Might not be the most impressive view Miguel had seen (almost guaranteed it wasn't) but that didn't mean it wasn't worth a memento photo.
"Got my phone," Miguel answered. He looked around. "Where's the top?" He had been sort of making up a route as he went along, instead of having looked at it.
Dwight pointed across to the other side of the bridge and to the final obstacle - a couple of tall vertical wooden ladders that lead to a final platform high up in the trees.
"Best view will be up there," Dwight said with a grin. "Though that climb is gonna be a beast," he muttered to himself as he got ready to start across the bridge.
"Maybe for you," Miguel said, smirking. He headed for the bridge and started over. He debated waiting for Dwight and bouncing on it just because, then decided he wasn't that big an ass, and just continued over it, one hand running along the waist-high rope as he walked.
Damn that sharp hearing. Dwight shook his head and grinned as he started over the bridge, waiting till Miguel was pretty much to the other side. He was used to bridges like this and heights didn't bother him. There had been a fair share of similar bridges around Haven. It had been a... few years though. So he carefully made his way over the bridge and waited for a moment as he watched Miguel take in the final ladder climb.
Miguel nodded at him and started up, making his way to the top. He pulled himself onto the platform and leaned out over the edge, then took out his camera to take a picture of the view. The land sloped down from here, so there was some pretty impressive distance.
He waited for Dwight, then snapped a picture of him coming up over the edge, too.
Taking a deep breath Dwight sized up the ladder and started climbing, making a decent pace. Until he got about a little over halfway up and started to slow. Vertical climbs were not that easy at his size and weight. And by the time he reached the top he was breathing a bit heavy.
As he pulled himself up to the edge he looked up at Miguel as he snapped the photo and gave him the finger. He laughed and pulled himself the rest of the way up and stood beside Miguel and took in the view.
"Okay, so that was a little less triumphant and a little more 'oh, shock, why am I doing this again', but hey." Miguel shrugged. "Still a good pic. I won't send it to Rosa, okay?"
He nodded at the view. "This is something you don't get in a city. Too many buildings to really get a vista."
"Bit of a climb there for a mere human," Dwight said with a smirk. He stood and looked out over the expanse before them.
He pulled out his own phone and snapped a picture of him and Miguel with the vista stretching out behind them. "Might not be able to send it to Gabriel or Rosa, but no reason there can't be one with you to commemorate the climb with."
"Rosa's fine, but you know she'll make fun of us," Miguel said. "'Wow, I'm impressed, you know how to work a phone' or something. Or say it's not my best side. Or talk about what kind of sniper's nest this would make." Because this was Rosa, after all.
"It would make a nice sniper lookout," Dwight agreed with a laugh. He snapped a few more photos then slipped the phone back into his pocket and looked down to the small crowd below still watching them.
"Nice to see you do have at least a little bit of a nature-loving side under that city boy exterior," he said with a wink. "Had me worried there for a bit."
Miguel laughed. "Hey, I have nothing against trees and grass! I'm just not used to them much anymore. And humans built houses and beds for a reason; I see no point in ignoring them."
Some of the people on the ground waved, and Miguel raised his hand in a half-wave back. "What do you think they'd do if I just jumped down there?"
Dwight chuckled and gave Miguel an approving nod. "Well maybe sometime I can get ya really in touch with the grass and trees with an honest to goodness campout!' He laughed as he saw the look on Miguel's face.
"As far as the people on the ground right now...they would lose their ever-loving minds if you took a free dive from up here," Dwight said matter-of-factly. "And anyone who didn't die of a heart attack would make sure we never came back here again."
Dwight waved down to the crowd as he hooked his line to the final cable that ran along the zipline back down to the ground. "Best to humor the simple-minded humans" he said with a shrug.
"Story of my life," Miguel said. He waited for Dwight to reach the ground before starting down himself. It was kind of fun going this way, even if it wasn't his usual.
Dwight slid down and stood at the bottom waiting for Miguel. As he came down, Dwight pulled out his phone and snapped a couple pics of him on the way down. He slipped the phone in his pocket as Miguel got unhooked and out of the harness, giving Miguel an innocent shrug and smirk.
Miguel rolled his eyes. "Yeah, yeah." He thanked the woman helping him out of the harness. "So what's next?"
Dwight nodded and gave a quick wave to the crowd that was slowly dispersing and turned to Miguel.
"Well, if we want to stay here they have the indoor obstacle course and a water obstacle course. Or I think I saw online that there was a science center or something nearby. Course, our science here is probably like stone age level science for you," he added with a chuckle.
"Just means it's more a museum," Miguel said with a grin. "What's in a water obstacle course? Might be a bit more even a challenge if there's no climbing."
"It's essentially an obstacle course set over large pools. You make it through the course, you stay dry. You fall off, you get wet," Dwight said simply. "Other than that, there's not much else here. There were a few mini golf courses around and I think I saw a sign for paintball on our way here. We kinda left the city and headed for the backwoods area," he added with a chuckle. "Sorry about that."
"Oh, I was thinking it was something underwater." Miguel shrugged. "Never mind." He gave Dwight a wry smile. "I did know the entire US isn't city. Head out and keep going, then? Pick a direction."
Dwight chuckled and thought for a bit as they got unharnessed and headed back out towards the truck. "Start to mosey back towards home? Take another route and see what we find along the way?"
"What, already?" Miguel raised an eyebrow at him. "We're not even across the Mississippi yet, and you've already had enough? Some road trip this is." It was already the longest one he'd ever been on that didn't involve the threat of death, but details.
"Ha! I didn't realize that was the goal for this time around," Dwight said with a smirk. "Tell ya what, next time we hit the road we'll try for it. Or hell, if you can be convincing enough, maybe... MAYBE.... I'll consider trusting Portalcity outside an official school trip....maybe...we'll see."
Miguel shrugged. "If you're not up for trusting the gnomes, we can go by way of my team. Usually more reliable, though there's always the danger the bugs will rope us into saving some dimension from danger." He thought about it. "Probably better to go with the gnomes if you want a vacation."
Dwight nodded as they stood by the truck. "I barely enjoy flying in a plane so yeah.... Teleportation, interdimensional travel... it's just a wee bit out of my comfort zone..." he said, holding his finger and thumb apart barely and smirking. "But still might be willing to give it a try. I survived the school trip to Boston. So that's something at least!"
"Never seen anybody die or get maimed in one," Miguel pointed out. "Apparently you can get some really weird layovers, though."
Dwight gave him a side glance as he considered that for a moment then nodded slowly. "Well, maybe. Someday. I might be convinced to give it a try. Guess it would be quite the experience to see things out there," he said gesturing vaguely. "And it would be good to meet your Sasquatch one day."
Miguel grinned. "No gnomes required for that one; I'm not sure their portals could even get to the Panoptichron. For that we'd just call up the team and get them to bring us in. Different kind of portal."
"Ah well, one way or another. Might be willing to give it a go," Dwight said as they got to the truck and he fished out the keys from his pocket. "I mean, I survived Haven and Fandom. So surviving a little portal hop somewhere should be easy right?" Dwight chuckled and added, "I mean gotta start somewhere right?"
"You probably don't have to." Miguel shrugged. "But it's the easiest way to get places from Fandom, and it's really no worse than a car ride. And there's a lot to see out there." He rolled his eyes. "I really don't recommend trusting the team to take you other places - there's as likely to be a catastrophe in the world as anything - but just visiting is fine."
"Sort of the whole driving yourself someplace deal? 'Oh, I'm sorry you got to go do such and such all of a sudden, well... Well we have our own ride so we will just be on our way and let you guys get to it.' Am I far off on that?" Dwight asked with a chuckle. "I learned really early on to not get rides with friends unless you are willing to get stuck with them running off on who knows what random adventure."
Dwight unlocked the door and climbed in and gave a glance back into the back seat and grinned. Pinky the dog was still safely strapped into the seat and the few other toys they had kept from the fair were sitting on the seat as well.
"Something like that," Miguel agreed. "There's not a lot of time off when you've been tasked with fixing the multiverse." He shrugged. "I get away with it because I'm a volunteer, not a conscript. But when things come up, there's usually not much warning before having to head off."
He sighed at Dwight checking the toys as he climbed in himself. "They're not likely to go anywhere on their own, you know. And if they do, we've got other problems."
"I was more worried about someone trying to steal them," Dwight said somewhat defensively, though yeah, he was mostly just goofing around.
As they got in and situated and he started up the truck he glanced over at Miguel.
"So where we heading next? Your pick this time."
Miguel shrugged. "Drive; let's see what we find. That direction." He waved. "I'll let you know if I spot something interesting."
Dwight smirked as they started on their way, wondering if Miguel realized he was sending them back towards home or not. It didn't really matter. There were plenty of roads to take to get back home and plenty to keep them busy. Lots of diners to hit up, roadside attractions to see, locals to annoy, and things to see and do. And if they made it back to the island sooner rather than later they still had quite the list of things to talk about when they got back. All in all, it had already turned out to be quite the enjoyable little road trip. Dwight just hoped Miguel had enjoyed it just as much.
Eh, Miguel would figure it out eventually. "Onward!"
